When I began this 'obsession' with FLESH AND BLOOD I hoped to craft a horror tale for the ages with literature's greatest iconic characters like they had never been seen before but also very grounded in the Gothic traditions, atmosphere and exotic places these characters and stories are known for. October 19 will see the release of the first part of Neil Vokes' and Robert Tinnell's new 4-part comic book ouevre Flesh & Blood which will be of special interest to all the readers of this blog as this is not just created by two of the biggest Hammer Horror (and Glamour!) During the many meetings at SDCC John Landis (AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON) conferred with Kerry Gammill about the upcoming story he is writing for BELA LUGOSI'S TALES FROM THE GRAVE. John is enjoying the process of working for the comic book medium. The new story promises to be another THRILLER for the fans!

The first of four epic graphic novels in the horror series, FLESH AND BLOOD, ships for Halloween.

At the SDCC panel writer Robert Tinnell revealed some interesting tidbits about certain classic horror icons that will be featured in pivotal roles during this centuries to come battle. A war is beginning between the masters of the dark arts and the leading authorities of science and reason that will spread from Transylvania to Europe to Egypt and across time.

FROM RICK BAKER COVER TO LUGOSI COMIC PAGE - MONSTERVERSE STORY PROCESS

MONSTERVERSE is a fairly new independent comic book and transmedia company working with the best in the comics industry and the horror film world. Here is a quick look into how a story begins and moves to the comic page.

First you need a story idea. In this case we had the inspiration of Academy Award-winning make-up artist legend Rick Baker's wonderfully bizarre cover to start with.

Next a story outline was worked up by publisher KERRY GAMMILL. Kerry is quite the busy executive with the company and has his artistic hands in everything. After noodling this together Kerry jumped to one of his other jobs (Publisher, editor, artist, writer). Next West Coast Editor Sam F. Park drew a very rough draft of the layouts for the story. Sam and Kerry often work like this to get the process rolling. Here is page one from STRANGE TO THE FINISH.

At some point Kerry finishes his other work (which is never really finished; there is always something new to do) and works up another rough draft based upon his analysis of how to generate more excitement with the layout.

Kerry uses ILLUSTRATOR to work up this kind of rough layout and page designs. If Kerry is the artist he then goes on to create the finished work but in this case the story is to be illustrated by the supremely talented artist, Kamil "Kurt" Kochanski. So Kurt looks over the layouts and the story and begins his own interpretation of how he sees telling the story.

As you can see, this beautiful page is still a work in process. Kurt will continue to finish the "inks" and word balloons and a title will be worked up to best fit among the story's action. Along the way a colorist will finish the page with the proper colors.

BELA LUGOSI'S TALES FROM THE GRAVE was recently featured on the front page of Diamond's AUGUST PREVIEWS website (under their new Pre-Orders section). And beating out the top comic companies and independents in Diamond's universe.

The book was cited by the Diamond staff as both a FEATURED ITEM and CERTIFIED COOL in the AUGUST PREVIEW magazine (Page 298).

A special celebration of Lugosi films, the new comic book and its contributors is set for the American Cinematheque in Hollywood at its Egyptian Theater on Thursday, October 28th.

BELA LUGOSI'S TALES FROM THE GRAVE will be a double-sized 48-page color quarterly and retailing for $4.99 and with no ads (except for a house ad announcing a serial adaptation of the novel DRACULA and starring BELA LUGOSI starting in issue # 2). It is pure comic book fun from front to back with a brief article on Lugosi.

"BELA LUGOSI'S TALES FROM THE GRAVE" will feature some of the most talented storytellers working today in comic books and horror films. No other comic book series is doing this nor has these horror film heavyweights working in any comic book.

Movie directors like John Landis ("An American Werewolf In London", "Burke And Hare") and Joe Dante ("Gremlins", "The Howling") along with make-up genius Rick Baker ("American Werewolf In London", "Michael Jackson's THRILLER", "Men In Black"), will be providing stories and art for future issues. More Hollywood horror film creators are also working up stories.
